Message > But if you want to get into it, you can NOT buy a HKS GT turbo from garret. Does garret make them? Sure do. Does garret sell you the exact turbo hks does? Not a chance.

You can buy Garret GT series turbos from many Garret distributors. They do not have any exclusive agreement with HKS, and you do not have to go through HKS to get them. Since Garret makes the GT turbos and all the parts for them, you can in fact order the same parts that HKS uses.

> Also, everyone and their mom knows about the T78/T88 kits. And everyone knows they are mitsubishi turbos. Does it matter? Greddy charges 100 more then if you went direct from mitsubishi.

If Greddy charges 100% than Mitsubishi does for the same T78/T88 turbo that Mitsubishi makes, why would people buy the part from Greddy? Why go through a middle man if you can get it from the guy who made it?

> Its not a turbo that was stock on a high volume car, and it makes insane HP, so it will always be pricey.

You don't need to get one from a high volume car to get a good deal. Just eliminating an expensive middle man is going to save you money.

> Same with much larger injectors. Although Z injectors are the biggest rip off i've yet to see, supra ones arent cheap either. Just realise that not EVERY company is rebadging stuff and reselling it, companys like Greddy/HKS/Blitz actually do R&D.

What R&D did they need to do to buy another OEM injector that fits? If you look at the .pdf files on some manufacturers sites, you will see a similar injector model offered in a variety of flow rates. If you are using those injectors and are maxxing them out, then most likely you can buy another injector in that line that has a higher flow rate. The thing you have to realize is that these companies use off-the-shelf hardware. They do not design and manufacture a special injector just for 300ZX's.

I can understand how someone that exclusively hangs out in import racers circles can think that this is the way the business works, and this is how it has to work. If you pick up an import mag, you see every car with big name brand parts on it.

But most of the guys that I know that have REALLY fast cars (10's or better) do not follow that mentality. They don't go for the racer image, they just buy what works. Unless a racer is sponsored by a company like HKS or Greddy, usually they won't waste the money buying those parts.

During the summer on Sunday nights, I hang out with the domestic crew in Philly. All of them have fast cars, but none of them considers their car to be anything out of the ordinary. Just for reference, out of the 10 or so regulars there, 1 is in the mid 9's with a SC'ed mustang, about 5 are in the 10's, and the rest are in the low 11's.

Obviously I ask them what their mods are, and one thing remains in common- there are no "trendy show parts" on the cars. No greddy, no HKS, no Stillen. Only things like Crower rods, Isky cams, Eagle rods, JE pistons, Garret turbos... things like that. They tell me not to waste my time with HKS or "any of that shit" as they'd say.

So please try to understand where I'm coming from here. I'm not trying to upset everyone's way of thinking or what they've learned, but when I hear people running 13's telling me that I should get HKS turbos, and people running 9's and 10's telling me that I shouldn't bother with "any of that shit", I'm going to believe the guy with the faster car.

Who would you believe? The guy that spent $8k to run 12's or the guy that spent $5k to run 10's?
